Now that I’ve managed to track down and try some of the things featured on my blog that I haven’t had before, I thought I’d post brief opinions of them.

Lychees (Litchi chinensis) are very juicy and sticky and have a flavor reminiscent of sweet rosewater. ★★★★★

Longans (Dimocarpus longan) taste like a watered down lychee. ★★★★

Rambutans (Nephelium lappaceum) taste like a watered down longan, but they look the coolest. ★★★

Wax jambus (Syzygium samarangense) are light and crisp with a pithy center and taste kind of like Sprite. ★★★

Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is sort of like a baked plantain if you left the peel in, with the texture of a sponge. But maybe I cooked it wrong. ★★

Fiddleheads (several species of fern, mostly in the genus Osmunda) resemble bitter asparagus. ★★★

Finger limes (Citrus australasica) are filled with tiny, crisp balls of lime juice, like fruit caviar. ★★★★★

Mamey sapote (Pouteria sapota) tastes like pumpkin pie, and a bit like butterscotch, and has an avocado-like texture. ★★★★★

Cherimoyas (Annona cherimola) are soft, with many large seeds, and taste like a combination of pear and pine. ★★★★

Pili nuts (Canarium ovatum) resemble pistachios in flavor but have a buttery texture, softer than a brazil nut, and seem to dissolve when you eat them. ★★★★★

Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) resembles strawberry fruit leather, with lemon, and is sour. ★★★★

Starfruit (Averrhoa carambola) is pretty much identical to a big green grape in flavor and texture. ★★★

Cashew apple (Anacardium occidentale)- though I’ve only had it frozen- is like mango mixed with chewable vitamin C tablets and Red Bull. ★★★

Garlic scapes (Allium sativum)are like asparagus with garlic. ★★★★

Watermelon radish (Raphanus sativus) tastes the same as a regular radish, but it looks pretty. ★★★

Quince (Cydonia oblonga) tastes like a combination of pear and lemon, and must be cooked before eating. ★★★★

Dragonfruit/pitaya (Hylocereus undatus) is bland and sweet with many crunchy little seeds similar to those in a fig. ★★★
